Microstructures and properties of rapidly solidified alloys

    Get PDF
The microstructure and properties of rapidly solidified aluminum alloys were researched. The effects of powder and flake chemistry and morphology and alternative consolidation processing parameters are being conducted. Samples of the powders being utilized were obtained for comprehensive metallurgical characterization. Seven aluminum alloys in the form of thin foils were studied by a variety of techniques including optical metallography, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. Details of the microstructural characteristics are presented along with a discussion of the solidification process. A better understanding of the microstructure of the rapidly solidified aluminum alloys prepared by a variety of techniques such as roller quenching, the vacuum atomized procedure, ultrasonically atomized in inert atmospheres, and atomized in flue gas was provided

Hanbury Brown and Twiss Correlations of Anderson Localized Waves

    Get PDF
When light waves propagate through disordered photonic lattices, they can eventually become localized due to multiple scattering effects. Here we show experimentally that while the evolution and localization of the photon density distribution is similar in the two cases of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, the density-density correlation carries a distinct signature of the type of disorder. We show that these differences reflect a symmetry in the spectrum and eigenmodes that exists in off-diagonally disordered lattices but is absent in lattices with diagonal disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, comments welcom

    Deep-STORM: super-resolution single-molecule microscopy by deep learning

We present an ultra-fast, precise, parameter-free method, which we term Deep-STORM, for obtaining super-resolution images from stochastically-blinking emitters, such as fluorescent molecules used for localization microscopy. Deep-STORM uses a deep convolutional neural network that can be trained on simulated data or experimental measurements, both of which are demonstrated. The method achieves state-of-the-art resolution under challenging signal-to-noise conditions and high emitter densities, and is significantly faster than existing approaches. Additionally, no prior information on the shape of the underlying structure is required, making the method applicable to any blinking data-set. We validate our approach by super-resolution image reconstruction of simulated and experimentally obtained data.Comment: 7 pages, added code download reference and DOI for the journal versio

    Text-based Editing of Talking-head Video

    No full text
Editing talking-head video to change the speech content or to remove filler words is challenging. We propose a novel method to edit talking-head video based on its transcript to produce a realistic output video in which the dialogue of the speaker has been modified, while maintaining a seamless audio-visual flow (i.e. no jump cuts). Our method automatically annotates an input talking-head video with phonemes, visemes, 3D face pose and geometry, reflectance, expression and scene illumination per frame. To edit a video, the user has to only edit the transcript, and an optimization strategy then chooses segments of the input corpus as base material. The annotated parameters corresponding to the selected segments are seamlessly stitched together and used to produce an intermediate video representation in which the lower half of the face is rendered with a parametric face model. Finally, a recurrent video generation network transforms this representation to a photorealistic video that matches the edited transcript. We demonstrate a large variety of edits, such as the addition, removal, and alteration of words, as well as convincing language translation and full sentence synthesis

Convex Polytopes and Quasilattices from the Symplectic Viewpoint

    Get PDF
We construct, for each convex polytope, possibly nonrational and nonsimple, a family of compact spaces that are stratified by quasifolds, i.e. each of these spaces is a collection of quasifolds glued together in an suitable way. A quasifold is a space locally modelled on Rk\R^k modulo the action of a discrete, possibly infinite, group. The way strata are glued to each other also involves the action of an (infinite) discrete group. Each stratified space is endowed with a symplectic structure and a moment mapping having the property that its image gives the original polytope back. These spaces may be viewed as a natural generalization of symplectic toric varieties to the nonrational setting.Comment: LaTeX, 29 pages. InsetGAN for Full-Body Image Generation

    Get PDF
While GANs can produce photo-realistic images in ideal conditions for certain domains, the generation of full-body human images remains difficult due to the diversity of identities, hairstyles, clothing, and the variance in pose. In-stead of modeling this complex domain with a single GAN, we propose a novel method to combine multiple pretrained GANs, where one GAN generates a global canvas (e.g., human body) and a set of specialized GANs, or insets, focus on different parts (e.g., faces, shoes) that can be seamlessly inserted onto the global canvas. We model the problem as jointly exploring the respective latent spaces such that the generated images can be combined, by inserting the parts from the specialized generators onto the global canvas, without introducing seams. We demonstrate the setup by combining a full body GAN with a dedicated high-quality face GAN to produce plausible-looking humans. We evalu-ate our results with quantitative metrics and user studies
